Burglary

Between 1998 and 2001, there were 112 domestic burglary crimes recorded for the Borough - this is 3.3% of the total number of crimes recorded.

Burglary is given two separate categories for recording purposes :

  • Burglary (Dwelling) – residential properties
  • Burglary (other) – non-residential properties (eg business premises, schools, offices, garages, garden sheds etc)
Recorded crime figures for the Borough between 1998 and 2001 show that the incidence of both categories of Burglary were significantly lower than the County average.

Time of day offence analysis showed that 58.9% of all Burglary (Dwellings) and 64.4% of Burglary (other) offences are committed between 1700-0259hrs. This has important implications for police patrols and the targeting of campaigns to reduce current Burglary levels.

The Crime Audit (Jan 2001) found that no Ward in the Borough had experienced more than 15 Burglary (Dwelling) and 25 Burglary (other) offences in any 12 month period.

The Crime Audit also found that the highest burglary rates (both categories) are concentrated in 4 town centre Wards – Elizabeth, Seton, Spittal and Tower, and in the most populous rural Wards of North Sunderland and Wooler. Action taken by the Partnership to address Burglary will be focussed in these areas.

Is Burglary a priority for the Partnership? No

The statistical evidence does not support the adoption of Burglary as a strategic priority. Less than one Burglary was committed in the Borough every 10 days.
