Vehicle Crime

Vehicle Crime is given two separate categories for recording purposes :

  • Theft from vehicles
  • Theft of vehicles

Some types of Vehicle Crime can be reported to the Police online.  The following crimes are deemed as minor:

  • Theft from a motor vehicle
  • Damage to a motor vehicle (not a road traffic collision)

These crimes can be reported by clicking on this link.

Elizabeth and Seton Wards have higher theft from vehicle rates than the County average, and only Elizabeth Ward shows a higher rate for theft of vehicle than the County average.

No analysis has been undertaken to determine whether on-street parking is more vulnerable than off-street parking. Not all town centre car parks are located in the most visible or busiest parts of Berwick. The Borough Council has committed to a wide-ranging appraisal of car parking arrangements following a Best Value review of its car parking service. The appraisal will involve an analysis of security arrangements, and consideration will be given to the suitability of Secure Car Park Status designation for certain town centre car parks.

Abandoned vehicles pose a specific danger. They are often used as an adventure facility by young people and provide an opportunity for vandalism by systematic dismantling. Vehicles are often set on fire and can produce toxic substances as a result. It is expected that the number of abandoned vehicles will continue to increase following the implementation of the End of Vehicle Life (EVL) regulations that class such vehicles as hazardous waste and the associated charge for disposal.Time of day offence analysis shows that 70.7% of all theft from vehicles occurs between 0900-2159hrs, and 72.1% of theft of vehicles between the hours of 1700-0259.

Is Vehicle-Related Crime a priority for the Partnership? No

Based on initial analysis, Vehicle-Related Crime will not be a strategic priority for the Partnership. However, the Partnership will assist with improvements to parking security and information campaigns targeted at improving car owners awareness of risk.
