Our aim is to develop an effective partnership in order to reduce crime and disorder and promote community safety in the Borough of Berwick-upon-Tweed in a cost effective and socially equitable way.
A particularly difficult problem to overcome, and one of our main priorities, is that of fear of crime. We who live in this part of the country are fortunate because we don’t suffer the levels of crime which exists in inner city areas but that fear of crime is real and often disproportionate. It can have a serious and paralysing effect on people within our communities. It is especially the vulnerable who are affected – older people, disabled people and, increasingly, young people.
The Crime and Disorder Act 1998 places a statutory duty on Berwick-upon-Tweed Borough Council, Northumbria Police and Northumberland County Council to prepare and publish a 3-year Strategy to reduce crime and disorder in the Borough Council area.
The Act imposes joint responsibility to:
• review levels and patterns of crime and disorder in the Borough of Berwick-upon-Tweed
• prepare an analysis of results
• publish a report (Crime Audit) and carry out consultation
• produce a Crime & Disorder Strategy for the area
• build community safety into all areas of service provision (under Section 17 of the Act)
What we need is a continuing dialogue with everyone who is keen to make this a safer place to live, work and enjoy life.
CDRP successes to date include:
- Environmental Improvement Scheme, Eastcliffe (SRB2)
- New town centre CCTV Scheme, Berwick (SRB2, Home Office)
- CCTV scheme extension/portable camera (Home Office)
- Youth Shelter, Eastcliffe/Highcliffe (Police Authority Grant Pool)
- Some of the first successful Anti-Social Behaviour Orders (ASBOS) in the County.
